Location: 214 Oxford Street, London
Product: Roof terrace
Industry: Construction / Property
Located in one of London’s most iconic shopping destinations, 214 Oxford Street has recently undergone a major transformation. Now home to central London’s first IKEA store and a Nike retail outlet, the building also houses modern office spaces on its upper floors.
As part of the refurbishment, Aztec Plants was brought on board by principal contractor McLaren Construction Group to deliver a standout green feature: a planted roof terrace offering views over the bustling street below.
Aztec was tasked with greening both the Southern and Eastern terraces of the building. The vision was to create a calm and uplifting space for office users to relax and unwind – suspended above the city.
To bring this vision to life, Aztec supplied and installed a combination of large planters and high-quality outdoor furniture made of timber and metal. The planters were filled with a rich mix of grasses, ferns, flowering shrubs, and climbing plants that twine up vertical screens. A particular highlight of the design is the introduction of meadow beds – lawn-like patches of wildflowers that create seasonal variety and support biodiversity by attracting bees and other pollinators.
The project presented some unique challenges. As the building is a listed structure, careful attention had to be paid to the weight of the installation. Planters were installed on a steel subframe, with placement calculated so that the load would rest on the building’s primary structural elements. Additionally, the historic roof’s uneven surface meant each planter had to be levelled individually to ensure visual balance and stability.

The project took approximately six months to complete, with five members of the Aztec team involved throughout.
The result is a vibrant, functional, and sustainable space that enhances the experience of those working in the building – a model for how underused rooftops in city centres can be transformed into green, usable areas that promote wellbeing and environmental value.
