Here, we share some common indoor plant problems and their solutions to help you keep your green space healthy and vibrant.

1. Not Enough Water

One of the most frequent questions we receive is about how much water to give plants. The right amount varies by plant species, and an imbalance can lead to several issues:

  • Ficus Benjamina: Often known as the weeping fig, this plant is sensitive to water stress. Insufficient watering can cause its leaves to turn yellow and drop off, creating a mess on the floor. Regular watering and monitoring are crucial to prevent this.

  • Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily): If the plant’s leaves start to droop or point downward, it’s typically a sign of water shortage. While the plant may look unsightly, it usually revives quickly once watered properly. Preventative maintenance and consistent watering schedules are key.

2. Too Much Water

Overwatering is another common issue and can be just as detrimental as underwatering:

  • Sansevieria (Snake Plant): Excess water can cause the stems to rot and collapse horizontally, often accompanied by a foul smell. It’s crucial to ensure the plant is not sitting in stagnant water and that the soil drains well.

  • Dracaena: Overwatered Dracaenas may exhibit slow growth, discolored leaves, and blotchy appearances. This can be corrected by adjusting watering habits and improving drainage. An experienced eye is needed to diagnose and rectify the issue effectively.

3. Lack of Light

Light levels play a crucial role in plant health:

  • Ficus Robusta: When this plant does not receive enough light, its leaves may become discolored and fall off, with little new growth. Proper placement in a well-lit area can help prevent these issues.

  • Rhipsalis (Mistletoe Cactus): This plant requires ample light to thrive. In low-light conditions, its delicate leaves may fall off, and the plant may deteriorate quickly. Ensure Rhipsalis receives adequate light to maintain its health.

4. Pests

Pests can be a significant threat to indoor plants:

  • Mealybugs: These pests attack young growth and can severely damage plants like Dracaena Marginata. They often infest the leaf joints, making them hard to remove physically. The plant may exhibit weakened growth and leaf loss over time.

To combat mealybugs, consider using either chemical treatments or biological controls. Biological methods involve introducing natural predators, such as ladybugs, which help control mealybug populations effectively.

By understanding and addressing these common issues, you can help ensure that your indoor plants remain healthy and thriving. At Aztec Plants, we’re dedicated to providing expert care and advice, so you can enjoy the beauty of your plants without worrying about maintenance.
